What is neuropathic pain?
Most people experience two types of pain: mechanical and neuropathic. Mechanical pain can be treated in a variety of ways, including physical therapy, chiropractic treatment and massage therapy. On the other hand, neuropathic pain is much more severe and difficult to treat. Neuropathic pain is typically characterized as chronic pain and caused by diabetes, chemotherapy, nerve injuries, infections, and exposure to some drugs or toxins.
Symptoms include a burning, tingling, itching, prickling, or numb feeling, and weakness. In many cases, these symptoms begin in the feet with a graduate onset of lack of sensation, tingling or pain that can move up towards the center of the body. Some people may also experience the inability to determine joint position, which could lead to falls or clumsiness. You may also experience an acute sensitivity to touch.
There are several types of neuropathic pain, including:
- CRPS: Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
- CIPN: Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy
- RSD: Reflect Sympathetic Dystrophy
- FBSS: Failed Back Surgery Syndrome
- Shingles Pain
- Diabetic-Induced Neuropathy
Neuropathic pain can also occur from other causes or injuries; however, each type of neuropathic pain can be debilitating in its own way. Many patients experience such severe pain that their lives are disrupted. Some patients cannot even work. In short, neuropathic pain can lead to significant dysfunction in your lifestyle.
How is neuropathy treated?
